Located between medieval Åhus and the large industrial and harbor areas, the Stinsen block is the first sight visitors encounter when entering the city from Hamnleden. Johan Sundberg Arkitektur AB and Martin Martinsson Architecture, commissioned by Scanbygg i Ystad AB, have proposed a plan to transform this area from a back-end commercial zone to a welcoming front for Åhus.

Design Concept
The vision is to create a representative meeting place, inspired by the medieval town’s architecture, with smaller blocks, narrow streets, and varied, colorful buildings. The proposal includes demolishing existing large-scale commercial buildings and dividing the area into four smaller blocks to harmonize with Åhus' historic urban fabric. New alleys, inspired by the town’s original layout, will connect key points such as the old railway station, library, and Köpmannagatan.

Public Spaces and New Buildings
A new square will serve as a flexible space for parking, markets, and events, acting as a gateway to Åhus. The new residential and commercial buildings will maintain the town’s small-scale charm while incorporating modern elements. Key features include mixed-use buildings with shops and restaurants on the ground floors, private courtyards, and pedestrian-friendly streets.

The design carefully balances modern architecture with the historical context, preserving the character of Åhus while supporting a vibrant, sustainable urban center.
